Telstra Aims To Hike Rivals’ Access Costs
Original Story

Consumers could be left holding heavier internet and telephone bills if Telstra goes ahead with plans to place a 20 per cent increase on the prices it charges competitors to access the telco’s copper access network. Industry sources have confirmed toThe Australian that Telstra has issued new wholesale contract negotiation terms to its competitors, outlining its plans to jack up charges across its wholesale fixed line services by 20 per cent.
Access to Telstra’s copper network is likely to be the subject of high demand over the next eight years as the government’s $43 billion national broadband network is built.
Telstra’s competitors — such as AAPT, Macquarie Telecom and iiNet that access the telco’s copper network to provide fixed voice and broadband services to consumers — have for years resisted changes to the wholesale pricing regime, arguing that price increases could threaten their business models.
The proposed changes — which purportedly raise the monthly wholesale telephone line rental from about $24 to $31 a month — will result in Telstra’s competitors baying for its blood, because any upward shift in wholesale prices would represent millions of dollars worth of lost revenues.
Microsoft – IE Security Flaws
Microsoft said it is investigating a hole that cyber attackers are taking advantage of in IE 6 and IE 7.
“At this time, we are aware of targeted attacks attempting to use this vulnerability,” Microsoft said in an advisory posted along with a routine release of patches for Windows and Office software.
“We will continue to monitor the threat environment and update this advisory if this situation changes.”
Hackers could use the flaw to remotely seize control of computers. The new IE 8 web browser and an old IE 5 version are not affected, it said.
The warning came less than two months after Microsoft released a patch for an IE 6 software hole through which China-based cyber spies attacked Google and other firms.
No matter which web browser people use, upgrading to the most current version promises to increase protection against hackers.
